Project Overview
This Kensington project involved replacing an existing metal-framed garage with a bespoke garden annexe designed to provide comfortable, independent living space within a compact courtyard garden.
The brief was to create a fully self-contained living environment that could be used year-round, while ensuring the building sat comfortably within its surroundings and did not feel out of place in the confined garden setting.

Planning & Design Considerations
Due to the intended use of the building as a full-time living space, the project required planning permission. A full planning application was prepared and submitted, which was approved without issue.
Careful attention was given to the building’s scale, proportions, and external appearance to ensure it complemented the existing property and respected the character of the surrounding area.
The building was carefully positioned against the existing flower bed, allowing it to sit naturally within the courtyard garden and giving the impression that it has always been part of the space. This approach helped minimise visual impact while preserving the established planting and character of the garden.
Materials & Specification
The annexe features bespoke wide-format anthracite windows, designed to maximise natural light while maintaining privacy within the courtyard setting. Access to the building is provided via a French door, offering a simple and elegant point of entry.
Externally, the building is finished in heat-treated natural timber cladding, selected for its durability, stability, and low-maintenance properties. Over time, the timber will naturally weather to a soft silvery tone, allowing the building to age gracefully and blend further into its surroundings.
Internally, the annexe includes a fully integrated bathroom, complete with a bath, shower, WC, and wash basin. This level of specification ensures the space functions as a true self-contained living environment, suitable for comfortable year-round occupation.
